rules and regulations to fly drones in India

Rules and Regulations to Fly Drones in India (updated)

To fly drones in India, you need to abide by the Unmanned Aircraft System Rules (UASR), as asked by the Ministry of Civil Aviation, Govt. of India. It includes acquiring a remote pilot certificate, UIN, and UAOP that we are going to cover now.

On 11th February, the Govt. of India announced the Drone Amendment Rules 2022, which simplifies the drone registration process and is expected to help out drone enthusiasts in the country. This amendment abolished the requirement of a Remote Pilot License. Instead, a Remote Pilot Certificate (RPC) from any authorized remote pilot training organization through the DigitalSky Platform would be enough.

As long as you use a drone with a weight of up to 2 Kg for non-commercial purposes, you do not even require such a certificate. So, this is a great opportunity for drone lovers across India, and we are expecting increased usage of drone cameras for photography and videography among travellers.

To simplify the registration process, DGCA included drones into 5 categories.

What are the different categories for drones?

There are, in total, five different categories of drones. DGCA classifies drones based on their size and shape. We will be discussing the various types as follows:

  1. Nano Drones: They weigh up to 250g and will fly quickly in remote areas and help you take tricky shots.
  2. Micro Drones: These drones have a weight of 250g-2kg and can fit in tiny places. They are best for surveying harmful sites.
  3. Small Drones: Weigh between 2kg-25kg. They are mostly used for agricultural purposes.
  4. Medium Drones: These drones weigh between 25kg-150kg. They are pretty significant, and the army or the militants usually use them.
  5. Large Drones: With over 150kg, they serve soldiers on the battlefields.

Do all drones need registration?

As per the current Indian government rules and regulations, all nano and micro drones with a weight of up to 2 Kg don’t need registration numbers as long as it is used non-commercially. You do not need to register Nano drones if you fly up to 50ft. in height. Stay away from flying into controlled airspace because that will require you to register. Also, make sure that no other drones are flying nearby. These factors will again need you to register for your Nano drone.

The government of India otherwise asks you to register all other drones. This means you need to generate the Unique Identification Number (UIN). So, with micro, small, medium, or large, you need the registration numbers. We would advise you to read the rules and abide by them.

How to register your drone?

You need to register all the drones except Nano drones. Register at the Directorate General for Civil Aviation’s (DGCA) website. By registering, you will get a Unique Identification Number (UIN) for the particular drone. After which, you need permission. An unmanned Aircraft Operator Permit (UAOP) is the gate pass through which you can fly. Visit the site and help yourself out.

What are UAOP and UIN?

Unmanned Aircraft Operator Permit is the complete form of UAOP. But UIN stands for Unique Identification Number. Directorate-General for Civil Aviation (DGCA) issues both numbers. You need to register in the portal to get these legal numbers. Other than the Nano drones that you fly under 50ft, you need to register for others.

What are no-fly zones?

Civil Aviation Requirements (CAR) issues specific guidelines. You need to abide by them when you fly. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) issued these regulations way back. The issues are the regulations on remotely piloted aircraft (RPA).

According to the exact CAR requirements, you cannot fly in certain areas. Much precisely, they have categorized these areas as such:

  • All the nearby airspaces that are surrounding the airports.
  • Any military places that acquire space do not allow drones.
  • You cannot fly near the State Secretariat Complex within the cities.

What permissions do we need to fly a micro drone for wedding photography?

To fly a micro drone for wedding photography, you need some permission. DGCA generates specific regulations taking safety measures. These are the rules that you need to adhere to for flying:

  • You must generate your Unique Identification Number (UIN) before flying.
  • Obtain permission from No Permission – No Take-off (NPNT). You have to obtain the permission slip from your OEM/ Manufacturer. Get the green signal from this digital sky to go flying.
  • You don’t have to get an Unmanned Aircraft Operator Permit (UAOP) for flying under 60m. But you must not fly in controlled airspace or prohibited zones.
  • You need to make the local police in the area aware before flying. Twenty-four hours beforehand, you need to make them aware of your flying.
buying guide for drone cameras

Buying Guide to Choose the Best Drone Camera for Vlogging & Photography

A drone is a heavy investment. Like every other high-end travel gadget like a binocular or a telescope, you must consider several critical decision-making factors. These are the quality, durability, battery performance, operating range, weather resistance, GPS of the drone, and a lot more. So, here is the entire list that you need to check to choose the best drone with a camera.

Select a suitable type of drone for your needs

Depending upon rotors

  • Multi-rotor drones: Quadcopters and hexacopters are multi-rotor drones. They are the best for hobby, nature photography and videography.
  • Single-rotor drones: These drones are similar to a helicopter. Single-rotor drones are used for surveillance by the militants.
different types of drones

Depending upon usability

  • Competitive drones: They are competitive drones for racing with a high-end and lightweight build. With high-speed, appropriate sensors for safety, they best serve the purpose.
  • Non-competitive drones: You can use drones for your photography passion. For leisure activities, choose the cost-efficient ones with fewer features. If you are a professional photographer for wedding photography, sophisticated drones work. Go for the drones with maximum flight time and more extended battery power. Non-competitive drones can be further classified into three subcategories-
    1. Selfie Drones
    2. Hobby Drones
    3. Professional Drones

Depending on User-friendliness

  • DIY Drones: These kinds of drones are more compatible and user-friendly. Since it is a do-it-yourself drone so you can tailor it as per needs, they are primarily helpful for competition purposes as you can select the necessary parts.
  • ARF drones are best because they need the least assemblage time. For more comfortable options, you can select BNF drones. You can control BNF drones with controllers.
  • Ready-to-Fly (RTF) Drones: You don’t have to assemble anything with these types of drones. All you need to do is re-charge the device after the charge exhausts. But of course, they are costlier.
purpose for buying drone

What is your purpose for buying a drone?

The different types of drones we have mentioned are classified based on their uses and purposes.

Single rotors are best for flying for more time. At the same time, multi-rotor drones become heavier and unsuitable for more flight time.

Militants make use of Fixed-wing drones that are way heavier. In comparison, drones with smaller sizes make them suitable for photography use. You can use them for competitions, videography and so forth.

We advise you to order drones based on your purpose. Choose a high-quality drone for professional photography. In contrast, choose toy drones with lesser features for your kids. Similarly, go for high-tech, high-speed competition drones for competition.

Quality and resolution of recorded video and photo

You must also note ground sampling distance, spatial resolution, and lighting features along with pixel resolution. These features help you check the focusing power of the camera.

shot on DJI drone

The camera resolution of 4k is the best if you want a high-grade image. They work well in dimly lit areas and capture accurate gradients. For more acceptable detailed views, you can go for a 5k camera. They capture images at around 12-20 MP photos.

shot on DJI drone

The drones mentioned above are the best for photography. In comparison, 1080HD quality videos are best for capturing natural sceneries. Even the 2k camera is good because they are less expensive. Select the cost-effective ones for sporting and racing functions. Watch the following video by Parker Walbeck to learn how to improve your skill in drone photography.

Battery performance and fly time

The best drones are the ones with a flying time of 30 minutes or more. They will stay more time afloat in the sky. Shoot the aerial vision or click incessantly for the best shots with them. You can thus use them for competing also.

Such high flight time means they have better battery performance. Professional photography drones have mostly 30 min to 40 minutes of battery life. Single-rotor drones are ideal for longer flight times.

While drones that stay for 8-10 minutes won’t stretch much, they are better for leisure time activities. But the problem with them is the battery charge exhausts quickly.

drone operating range

Operating range

Professional camera drone will cover around 7-12 km. Choose a higher control range for vlogging or simply clicking shots while hiking. They are also great to survey an area when you travel. So, stand in a single position and shoot faraway lands. Panoramic and wide-angle shots are best.

If you are a photographer, go for a drone with a 400 m to 3 km flying range. They are best for social occasions like weddings.

On the other hand, the toy drones will cover around 50-100 meters at a stretch. Pick them up for your kids.

High-quality drones allow the user to fly them within the permissible radius. They automatically set their positions according to the location of the pilot. But, be cautious about harsh weather. A stormy wind can push the drone out of the transmitting area where you will have no control.

Resistance to harsh weather and wind

External and environmental conditions are beyond our control. But the damages can be detrimental. So, choose a drone that can resist all these harms.

Waterproof drones would tackle rainy weather easily. They have large air vents that remove the excessive water.

Any stormy weather won’t result in electrical mishaps with these drones. You can fly smoothly with the propeller covers that protect them.

Look for drones that can bear harsh winds of speed up to 10-30mph. The emergency landing feature will save the gadget from harm. Thus, windy turbulences won’t make them dysfunctional even when the charge ends. For this very reason, we advise you to get drones that retain charge for a long.

Resistance to harsh weather and wind

Availability of spare parts

Different drone types will come along with various spare parts. Check it before purchasing because spare parts will save you bucks. Propellers are pretty standard spare parts because they damage easily. Check their extra availability while ordering a drone.

There are several spare parts that a drone comes like extra propeller sets, two sets of motors, and batteries. Quadcopters come with gear skids, gear shaft sets, and others. There are several quadcopter kits that the drones come along with.

Does it have GPS and tracking systems?

Most of the drones have GPS installed already. You can save your energy and time with autopilot mode. GPS also allows tracking and surveying.

Check the availability of drones if you want to travel with them. In rough roads and areas, GPS is helpful. You can get a prior view of the untravelled area in front. For photography, mainly nature and wildlife photography, this is best. Get the location of the gadget even in rough terrains. Check the GPS availability for better stability function.

motor and propeller of drone

The quality of the Propeller and Motor

Drone propellers help the drones to fly well and perform on-air tricks. You can pass the drone in varieties of modes because of the propellers. You can hover, ascend, turn, rotate, pitch or roll. For clicking pictures at different angles, you need great propellers.

Propeller blades with less pitch are better. They maintain a stable drone. Large propeller blades are more efficient. In contrast, smaller blades take up less charge. Propeller blades with the correct design will help in flying faster and improve the stability of the flight.

Choose a drone that can remain stable in mid-air. That simply states the efficiency of your drone. A robust motor will save your drone from mishaps and accidents. On average, most drone motors come with an angular speed of 50000 RPM. So, you can check the effectiveness using this thumb rule.

Durability and quality matter a lot. Check the warranty period of a drone. It will give you a clear idea about what will happen in the future.

Controller and app support

Using a drone controller, you can control the drone effortlessly. The controller’s transmitter sends radio signals to the drone. In this way, you don’t lose your grip on the device. Of course, this very reason makes controllers more critical.

You must check certain factors while selecting a drone controller. A typical frame size of 250+ mm is enough for better visibility. A 350+mm frame works best. You can go for either one. But for professional and videography purposes, choose a large frame.

Processor quality and autonomous functionality also are helpful. Higher functionality and processor work best.

Remote control drones, namely Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV), work well. You can control them via the app and other functions. They are the best options because most of them don’t even require any cellular support.
